Kenya is home to the two of the three tallest mountains in the African continent. It offers mountain climbing lovers some of the best hiking expeditions in the world.
Mt. Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania near the border of Kenya. It’s just south of the equator. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and fourth highest of the seven summits, it’s considered the tallest freestanding mountain in the world, rising 15,100 feet (4600 meters from base to summit. Kilimanjaro is composed of three distinct volcanic cones. Ibo 19,340 feet, Mawenzi 16,867 feet and Shira 13000 feet, Uhuru peak is the highest summit on Kibo’s crater rim. Kilimanjaro is a giant Strato volcano that began forming a million years ago when the lava spilled from the rift valley zone. The mountain was formed by successive lava flows. Two of its three peaks Mawenzi and Shira are extinct while Kibo, the highest peak is dormant and could erupt again. The major eruption occurred 360,000 years ago, while the most recent activity was only 200 years ago. Kilimanjaro has 2.2 sq kilometers of glacial ice and is losing it quickly due to global warming. The glaciers have shrunk 82% since 1912 and declined 33% since 1989.It may be ice free 20 years which will dramatically local drinking water, crop irrigation and hydroelectric power. The mountain lies within 756 sq km, a UNESCO world heritage site and is one of the few places on earth that encompasses of ecological life zone including tropical jungle, savannah, desert to montane forests, subalphine plants and the alpine zone above timberline.
Kilimanjaro common routes:
Marangu route, Machame Route, Rongai Route, Lemosho route, Mweka route
Machame and Lemosho routes are popular and scenic.marangu is the easiest and busy although the last a scent to the crater rim is difficult. Climbing Kilimanjaro is easy and requires no technical climbing or mountaineering experience. With the exception of the summit zone, wildlife is potentially encountered throughout the lower parts of the climb. Animals existing in this area include: elephants, buffalo, eland on the northern slopes, black and white colobus monkeys,skyes monkeys and birds such as sunbirds, augur buzzard ,mountain hawk eagle lammergeyer and white napped ravens. Covered in mist most of the day Mount Kilimanjaro is the most tourist attractive site in Tanzania, pulling in thousands and thousands of tourists each year.
Kilimanjaro houses over 140 species of mammals, 179 species of birds and at least 7 larger mammal species above the tree line.

Mount Elgon is the eighth highest mountain in Africa and has the largest base area of any free standing volcano in the world. It was formed when the earth’s crust erupted creating the great Rift valley.Its a prime trekking mountain in East Africa. Mt.Elgon is a huge volcano with the largest crater of the major peaks in Africa. There are several waterfalls on the slopes, and even hot springs to soak in inside the crater major attraction is a series of four caves that is Kitum, Makingeni,chepnyalil and the Ngwarisha,all of which are explorable. The caves are favorite places for elephant’s every night, long convoys venture deep into the caves. The elephants on this mountain are savannah elephants not the forest elephants of west and central attraction Africa. The most frequently visited cave in mt Elgon is called Kitum.
Mount Elgon is a huge, ancient and eroded stratovolcano which is located at the Uganda-Kenya border. Although not the tallest of the isolated volcanoes of East Africa, its among the largest in volume rising up from a base over 80km(50 miles) in diameter on the plains at about 4000ft elevation.Elgon is noted for its unique Afro-Alpine trees and plants and for caves in its mid elevation slopes ,where elephants and other large animals can often be seen. These caves are not lava tubes because Elgon has few suitable lava flows.
Mount Elgon offers excellent climbing and walking adventures. No special equipment for hiking is required and the park management can provide guides. The highest peak is Koitobos(4200m) and its reached across beautiful moorlands and the hot springs can seen on the way.
Sasa River Route: It’s on the Ugandan side and its probably the best route
The area is full of fascinating geology, nature, wildlife and it offers endless trekking opportunities. Some of the attractions include:

Flora and Fauna :While ascending Mt.Elgon’s enchanting slopes,you will pass through dense montane forest and mixed bamboo belts teeming with birdlife.This mountain is truly unique you will enter the fascinating heath and moorland zones containing endemic plant species such as the giant lobelia and groundsuls.
Traditionally the most popular destination on mount Elgon is the sipi falls where the sipi river rises on the upper slopes of mt Elgon before cascading down the foothill over 8km to form a series of four pretty waterfalls culminating in a 99m drop at an altitude of 1,775m outside the small trading center of sipi.
Mt. Longonot is a dormant stratovolcano located southeast of Lake Naivasha in the great riftvalley.A of Kenya. It isthought to have last erupted in the 1960’s.Its name is derived from the Masai word oloonongot which means mountains of many spurs or steep ridges. Mount Longonot is 60km northwest of Nairobi. The ecosystem mainly comprises of the mountain rising to 2,776m above the sea level. This Mountain is a captivating sight for tourists. The mountain sides now have beautiful carved v-shaped ridges and valleys with deep forests inside the crater giving it a lush green look.
