Lake Nakuru is one of the rift valley soda lakes at an elevation of 1754m above the sea level. It lies to the south of Nakuru, in rift valley .Its known as an ornithological paradise by bird watchers.This lake is small and Narrow,alkaline –saline lake located in a closed basin without outlets in the Eastern rift valley of equatorial East Africa. Lake Nakuru is truly the greatest bird spectacle on earth.
Lake Nakuru is the ideal place for bird watching enthusiasts, who are impressed by multitude of bird species. Great white pelican, martial eagle, pygmy dip, vindereul, bitlanul of Madagascar are just a few of the many species that can be seen in Lake Nakuru.
A bird lover is happy to admire the thousands of pink flamingos in this lake. On the shores of the lake, white rhinos can be observed, with large number of baboons. The lake shores are covered by swamps that during the driest season disappear to give rise to huge white salt crusts. The riverine forest opens up southward in a bush and acacia tree Savannah.
The eastern and western shores are framed by ridges that offer splendid lookouts over the lake. Lion hill ,baboon cliff and out of Africa at the west shore ,baboon cliffs are the preferred habitat for some of the parks species, part of lion hill is covered by a magnificent Euphorbia or candle tree forest ,giving the land scape a prehistoric look.
Mammals: 56 different species has been witnessed here including white rhinos and waterbucks
Baboon cliff: offers magnificent views across the sky mirrored waters of the lake with 100m nature trail along the cliffs.
Out of Africa Hill: makes a good sun downer spot.
Acacia picnic site: makes a cool green lunch time venue
